REINSTORM THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER

"Healing with Horses..... Leaving Limitations Behind"

DID YOU KNOW?

The horse has a unique three-dimensional movement which replicates the movement that the human body experiences while walking.  Therefore a person who is in a wheelchair on the ground is able to experience the muscle stimulation and body movement that occurs while walking, which may be the only time they are able to ever feel that sensation.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF THERAPEUTIC RIDING INCLUDE:  Improved coordination, improved muscle tone, relaxation of spastic muscles, improved posture and balance, improved gross and fine motor skills, increased range of motion and strength, improved cardiovascular function and stamina.

PSYCO-SOCIAL BENEFITS INCLUDE:  Increased self-confidence, self-esteem, and self control, mastery of a difficult task, increased understanding of cause/effect, increased desire to take repsonsibility, improved social interactions and teamwork, increased ability to act independently, increased desire to take risks, increased empathy and sense of empowerment, interaction with positive role models, experience of success in a supportive and safe environment.

COGNITIVE BENEFITS INCLUDE:  Increased vocabulary application and recall, improved attention and concentration, improved sequencing and planning skills, improved judgement and critical thinking skills, improved flexibility in thinking, increased verbal integration and participation.

Each session at Reinstorm is tailored to fit a particular client's needs, however to better describe therapeutic riding - here are some definitions of Hippotherapy and EFP.

Hippotherapy:

Hippotherapy (From the greek "hippo" meaning "horse") is physical therapy that utilizes the natural movement of the horse to help riders  regain physical strength, mobility, and coordination.  The similarities between a horse's pelvic movements at a walk, and the movement of a normal human pelvis enables the rider to physically learn or relearn skills and movements that may have been lost or compromised.  Speech, physical, or occupational therapy patients can improve muscle tone, balance, posture, coordination, respiration, and body awareness as they sit upon and ride a horse in an enjoyable and effective method of treatment.  Hippotherapy patients tend to be the best motivated physical therapy patients, because the work is fun!

Equine Facilitated Psycotherapy:

EFP is a combination of the therapeutic riding and traditional psychotherapy.  Therapeutic riding is an individualized program of learning to ride a horse, which takes into account a person's disabilities and limitations.  Priniciples of centered riding are used to enable the rider to increase his/her body awareness, to attain proper alignment, and improve balance, strength, and coordination.  The psycotherapy component of EFP integrates issues that arise during therapeutic riding with the larger and ongoing issues in the rider's life.  Examples of this might include, fear, anxiety, self-control, and depression.  As these issues are brought to light, both inside the riding arena and outside, therapist and rider work together to effect changes in the rider's life that are in keeping with the rider's own personal goals.
